Boosting Airflow with Inline Duct Fans
Posted by AC World on August 7th, 2014
Older houses, we well as those with an addition or three, can sometimes be the toughest residences to cool. Not only can ductwork be outdated or require internal repairs, but the twists and turns created by rearranging or adding onto ductwork can make it all but impossible for cooled air to go from the basement to, say, that extra room next to the extra room added 15 years ago.
Even if the ductwork has been installed properly, it can still take a lot of work to facilitate a proper exchange of air while cooling even an average home – something that’s also necessary to protect the health of the home’s inhabitants. No one wants to live in a stale atmosphere, particularly where humidity levels are high.
One way to ensure good ventilation and powerful airflow is to install inline fans within your home’s ductwork. The devices can drive out smells and moisture while operating quietly.
A single inline fan can ventilate multiple areas or rooms. They are typically installed in more remote areas of the home such as crawl spaces and attics, rather than being directly mounted into the ceiling. The inline fan connects to a duct system that is dedicated to either extracting stale air from the home or to pushing air through the system so that it reaches an appropriate rate of flow.
The fans can also be used to assist in the mitigation of radon gas, where complicated or long duct runs can hinder airflow. Have a dryer duct that runs from an interior room of the house? An inline fan can assist in expelling the machine’s air, ridding your home of moisture and helping to ensure that any lint not caught by the dryer’s screen trap will move safely out of doors.
And, of course, inline fans can help to move air through duct runs in order to cool or heat a remote room of the house that’s too hot or cold when compared to other areas of the home.
Inline fans can even be used to boost return air – the air that returns to your central HVAC system to be continually reused and re-cooled.
