Summer Tips to Keep Your Air Conditioner in Working Order
Posted by AC World on June 19th, 2014
With muggy summer weather setting in nationwide, Americans are scrambling to acquire air conditioners. However, both new and old AC owners should put some thought into efficient AC usage this summer! Though an AC unit is by far the best and easiest way to keep your home cool in hot weather, the AC doesn’t have to bear the whole burden of cooling your home. Here are some tips to save some money on your AC-related bills.
Firstly, if you are concerned about costs, you should consider exactly how cool you need your home to be. Can you still be safe and comfortable if you raise that thermostat temperature by one degree? How about two? It must be emphasized that your health and comfort must be your first priorities, but there is no sense in overdoing the cooling! You can save up to 5% of your bills just by raising the temperature by a single degree.
Be mindful of when you do and don’t need to cool your house all the way to your desired temperature. If you are going on vacation or taking a day trip, you ought to consider turning the AC all the way or partially off to save energy. Even while sleeping, your cooling needs may not be quite as pressing—most people can stand a little extra heat while asleep, and there are savings to be made here as well.
Always check for potential air leaks in your house. It is well known that leaving your door open with the AC on is a great way to gouge yourself when your bills come, but even the tiniest of cracks can be sources of wasted energy. Weather-strip or caulk cracks around windows and electrical outlets.
Make sure your AC filters are in good condition! During a hot summer, you should replace or clean your filters at least two or three times.
Consider investing in portable fans and ceiling fans, as well. Fans can make a room feel up to eight degrees cooler, so it is easy to see how the presence of one or more fans in the rooms you spend your time in can help you out at bill season! With properly placed fans, you can afford to leave your thermostat temperature a good deal higher.
Stay cool and stay safe this summer! Make sure you’re prepared for the hot temperatures on the way.
