Cutting Down on Pet Dander
Posted by AC World on March 20th, 2015
Improving the quality of the air inside your home could require more than simply installing the right filter and checking periodically to make sure it is clean, replacing it when necessary.
If your home has pets, then you may wish to take steps to reduce the effects of their dander and hair. Some shedding of these elements is natural, but when it is allowed to accumulate, it can pose health risks as well as clog ducts and filters. This, in turn, reduces the efficiency of your air conditioning unit, whether central or Portable or Window AC.
First, it is important to understand what pet dander is: Small flecks of skin shed by furry critters such as cats, dogs, rodents and even birds. Because these flecks contain various allergens, they can collectively become a breeding area for viruses and bacteria. Dander flecks can cause moderate to severe reactions in sensitive persons. Pet hair is less a concern for people and more a problem for your air conditioner unit.
In order to cut down on pet dander and hair, make sure to groom and brush your pet regularly. This can help in preventing the dander from gathering on their skin as well as in helping you control the area of the house where the dander is shed, making clean up easier.
Regularly clean the pet’s bedding and favorite places to rest at least once every week – particularly if these places are located in carpeted rooms. Taking advantage of washable throws and covers can save time and effort.
Make sure that the intake areas for your AC unit – vents, utility rooms, etc. – are kept as clean as possible by vacuuming frequently.
And do make sure that all filters in your AC units are checked and regularly cleaned or replaced. This is a simple step that can prevent the buildup of pet hair as well as dander that naturally works its way into your home’s ducts.
