How to Clean Your Split Air Conditioner
Posted by AC World on October 2nd, 2015
Now is the perfect time to give your split air conditioner a good cleaning. The process requires a few products, but it’s simple and doesn’t take much time. Let’s get started!
Step one: Get a bag to catch the waste
You can find special Aircon bags made specifically to catch the waste, but if you can’t find any in your area, any plastic bag will work.
Step two: Buy coil cleaner
Skip foam cleaners – they can be messy and get foam everywhere. They also don’t always get into the coils or rotor fan blades appropriately. Liquid solution sprays work best. Be careful of harsh cleaners designed to attach organics. They can damage new split air conditioners. These newer units frequently have a hydrophilic layer on their cooling coils, which helps improve airflow strength, and can be damaged by harsh chemicals.
Step three: Attach your bag
Attach the bag to the split air conditioning unit.
Step four: Spray the cleaner
It’s best to spray the cleaner at an angle on your cooling fan’s surface and right on the coils. Be sure your solution reaches as far into the coils as you can get it. Put the nozzle as close to the fans as possible.
Step five: Spray rotary blades
Your rotary blades are hidden inside the outlet of the airflow. You’ll want to use a far-reaching nozzle, like the type you’d find on a pressure garden sprayer. Coat every blade with the solution.
Step six: Wait 10 – 20 minutes
Depending on the solution you use, wait 10 to 20 minutes – however long the bottle suggests. Then it’s time to flush your coil and blades with a water sprayer to get all the grime into your bag. Some of the water will flow out via your A/C’s drainpipe.
Step seven: Wipe down the fan coil
Get a clean, dry rag to wipe down the fan coil. Then turn on your unit and lift up the front of the bag to let the rinse water spray into it. Remove your bag by the ends and carefully dump the waste. You’ll see tons of grime come out!
It’s pretty simple to wash your unit and should be done once a year. If your unit is beyond a simple cleaning, consider investing in a new one from the experts at AC-World.
