The 2 Essential Questions to Ask Yourself if You’re Considering a Ductless Air Conditioner
Posted by Ralf Schulz on March 22nd, 2017
Whether you’re building a new building and need an HVAC solution, or you have an older building and are re-thinking your heating and cooling options, there are just two questions you need to ask yourself as you compare ductless air conditioning with traditional central air and heating.
1. Do you want the entire building cooled exactly the same?
If you have a large building and you know that you want every room in it to be cooled the same at all times, then a ductless air conditioner may not be the best choice. However, if you want more control in individual rooms or areas, then a multi-zone ductless air conditioner may be the right choice for you.
There are a number of reasons that people want this type of control. First, it’s often the choice of people in older homes where one room has more heat and cooling loss than others. Think of it like this: Ductless is a good choice for people who have one room that is still too warm while the rest of the home is too cold. Ductless allows you to adjust the level of cooling and heating in each individual area so that it will all be cozy.
Another common use is in large buildings that have many rooms that often aren’t in use. For example, if you live in an historic home with six bedrooms but you only use two, why would you want to spend money heating and cooling the other bedrooms? Ductless air conditioning gives you the control to avoid this waste in energy and money.
2. Do you have the room for ductwork and the related equipment?
The examples above all discuss larger buildings, but what about small spaces that don’t have the room to install ductwork? This is often the case with finished attics, converted garages, and other areas that simply don’t require the money, time, and labor required to install ductwork, yet you want them to be cool.
Of course, ductless air conditioning and heating isn’t for every home and it doesn’t meet every need. But for those needs it does meet, it can be a huge help.
