When to Scrap an Appliance
Posted by AC-World on November 26th, 2014
Taking good care of household appliances and systems is the best way to extend their usefulness. One DIYer we know made a point every year of taking apart a hassock fan he owned (after disconnecting it from the power source, of course), cleaning all of the parts, oiling and greasing areas that needed it—and then re-assembling the whole machine, which ended up running well for more than 30 years.
However, there are times when it is better to consider recycling or scrapping a household appliance – particularly if the appliance poses any risk of injury to you or anyone else. Just because an appliance still works doesn’t mean that it should be permitted to continue to run. Some appliances show electrical wear more readily, though even those that don’t can be full of rust and/or mold, necessitating a switch-out for health reasons.
Here are a few reasons to consider replacing an appliance: The manufacturer has recalled the device; a more efficient model is available and within your budget; fees paid to repair the item (including shipping and any insurance) either approach or exceed the actual cost of replacement; the item has been run to the point that its overall appearance – and associated integrity of components -- is shot; the device no longer serves the purpose for which you bought it; you wish to reduce energy use; you are considering retirement or downsizing; or, you wish to take advantage of emerging trends and newer styles to suit your personal taste.
One telltale place to check for wear is the unit’s power cord. Many of these can become frayed due to age and abnormal wear, such as when pets make a habit of chewing cords, resulting in the danger of exposed wires. A wrapping of electrical tape will not solve the problem, and could provide a false sense of security. In addition, be sure that your appliance has a polarized plug at the end of the cord. And make sure that all electrical appliances have an acceptable UL rating.
Naturally, these issues are magnified when dealing with major household systems. Give AC World a call today to see if your HVAC equipment is wearing as it should – or is in need of maintenance or possible replacement.
